This article presents the mathematical model for selecting an investment portfolio with the maximum return and minimum risk, which is solved using the SIMPLEX method. The two problems are solved independently, and the investment rules are used to obtain the best investment portfolio with the results of both problems. For applying our model, the selection of an investment portfolio with three shares of the Mexican Stock Exchange is resolved, and the results are compared with those obtained using a statistical method commonly used for this purpose. The results show that it is possible to determine an investment portfolio with minimal risk at time zero and that the investment portfolio with the selected statistical method does not correspond to the solution determined by the optimization model.
